From: Harvey J. Karten Topic: Installation of Fleming Windvane, Model 501 Date: August 4, 2006 Vessel: Tayana 37, Mark I, Year 1977 Hull # 84 Pictures show installation of Fleming 501 Global Major on the stern of a Tayana 37. The unit was designed to permit mounting as close as possible to the stern. The Paddle length was made a bit longer than usual, and the turret tower was made taller to readily clear the stern pulpit. The photos demonstrate that this can be installed with minimal overhang. When the paddle is raised from the water, the stern profile is unaltered. Thus slip length remains the same, and there is no risk of direct damage if you bump the dock with your stern, or if another vessel hits the stern of the hull. Photos: “Tower clears stern light” was taken prior to shortening the counterweight arm, but shows that the original stern light was satisfactory and did not require moving the light. “Tower Support Bracket” shows unit compactly mounted against stern pulpit upper rail. For those wanting to install dinghy davits, this method of mounting would prove compatible. “Shows minimal overhang” demonstrates that when the paddle is dropped into the water, it only adds about 6” to the overall length of the hull. “Side View Stern” – paddle lifted out of water. Stern of hull is unaltered, other than vertical support tubes for the windvane. Counterweight arm has been shortened, but still experimenting with correcting weight consequent to shortening arm length. “Stern Quarter View” shows paddle down with clearance of hull, position of port support tube. (During installation. Final bolts not yet installed).\ “Stern View” Paddle raised. Note that unit is offset to starboard about 2.5” in order to clear backstay. Mounting is extremely sturdy, particularly after installation of “Tower Support Bracket” shown in previous photo. “Turret Clears Top Rail” – First sea trial. And it worked! Photo taken prior to installation of tower support bracket..
