The best place to keep instruments out of the way and readable from anywhere in the cockpit is to put them over the hatch. I did that 26 years ago and have never had a problem. Even got my engine out the hatch without removing them. But the SS safety bay/grab bar is a nescessity. Also makes it easy to swing down the hatch since it is a great handhold. Mines a V-42 vice T-37 but the concept is the same.
