From: Harvey J. Karten Date: April 2, 2005 Content: New chainplate and backing plate for Tayana 37 These photos show the form and dimensions of one of the new chainplates and the external backing plate. The location of the bend in the chainplate and the angle of bend duplicate that of the original chainplate. The bend was done as a "cold-bend" to minimize material stress. The material is 316-L stainless. Thickness of chainplate is 3/8". Thickness of backing plate is 1/4". Bolts are 3/8" 316-L Stainless. The hole pattern was exactly the same as that of the original chainplate. The portion of the chainplate that is likely to be exposed to saltwater and the elements was highly polished. The head of each bolt was made smooth with a grinding wheel and polished on a buffing wheel using red rouge. Caution was exerted to prevent the bolts from overheating when grinding and when polishing. (I used my fingertip as a precise thermal gauge! If it was getting too hot to touch, I let it cool down. I guess that was between 120-150 degs F.)
