From: "Keith Lindholm" To: Subject: Re: [islpkt-list] Lightning Date: Wednesday, July 17, 2002 10:23 PM Hi Jeff! (and the others) As a survivor of a direct lightning strike on my previous boat, an S2 27 with a keel stepped mast, I am glad the subject has been brought up. First, let me say that this was the most terrifying experience I had ever had in my life and I was originally under the impression that it was rare occurrence. After the strike, I met several sailboat owners who were also hit, directly or indirectly and found out that it is not as rare as I thought. Our strike was so severe that it shattered the fiberglass around the base mast, traveled throughout the entire electrical system and subsequently fried everything. Both batteries exploded inside their compartment, the electric starter for the outboard motor blew the engine cover off and the bow & stern lights were never found. Even the knot meter and depth transducers were blown out of the hull were we proceeded to take on water immediately. Thankfully, bystanders on shore, we were anchored approximately 75 yards off shore in Miami, Florida, came to our assistance immediately and after taking my wife to shore, helped me get the boat back to the marina. My point is this...This boat did have a grounding system! After our little incident, I met a cruising couple at Jones Boatyard on the Miami River and inquired about the eight inch hole in the bottom of their 52' ketch. To my surprise, the owner stated that he and his girlfriend took a direct strike two weeks prior to mine while en route to Miami from the Bahamas. It blew the six inch ground plate right out of the bottom of their boat... talk about a hair raising experience! Nonetheless, the reason I thought I would bring this up was that one....lightning does strike sailboats (of course FL is the lightning capital of the U.S.) more often than some boaters may think and two... If you actually take a direct strike and light up like a christmas tree like we did....don't become complacent because your boat has a bonding system in place....I initially was and so was the owner of the ketch.
