03/15/05 Pictures of new bowsprit and sampson posts on LoBo, CT37 hull #20. Bowsprit and pulpit braces are made of laminated Honduras Mahogany. The braces are epoxied to the sprit and are through bolted with 1/4" s/s bolts, nuts, flat and lock washers. Bolt holes were coated inside with penetrating epoxy prior to assembly. Holes are filled with plugs cut from scrap mahogany. The sprit is bolted to the deck and sampson posts with 5/8" s/s bolts inserted through 3/4" s/s ferrules. A 3/4" teak shim is used between the sprit and deck at the bow, and a StarBoard shim is used under the sprit at the sampson posts. The new stays'l and windlass plates are through bolted with 5/16" bolts and 3/8" ferrules and have new s/s backing plates. All holes are internally coated with penetrating epoxy. Sampson posts are made from laminated White Oak. They are fitted with new s/s deck collars and end caps. The posts fit through the deck and down into 8" deep pockets formed by the solid cast resin base of the anchor locker. Each post is pinned in place by two 8" long, 3/8" s/s lag bolts screwed in horizontally through the aft wall of the resin pocket, through the post, and into the forward resin base. The posts are coated with penetrating epoxy on all four sides and bottom on the inside of the boat. The sprit and posts are finished with Honey Teak two part polyurethane finish - three coats of pigment and two coats of clear. Chuck Snyder
